The Reichstag
24th of September 2008
For once in our trip we attempted to get out of the house early to do some sightseeing that necessitates early rising. The Reichstag is one of those sights and we rocked up at 10amish to a huge line. Fortunately for us, kids are the golden ticket straight to the top. So after airport like security scans we were accepted into Parliament culture by being presented with a German badge featuring colours of the country and an eagle. This Parliament as we all know has quite a history with WWII and the Wall. The House was burnt down on the eve of Hitler's rising supposedly by another party and apparently he did not step into this building. It was badly damaged through the war, but has since been restored complete with a new dome and a glass ceiling. It is situated right next to the Brandenburg gate but on the "west side". The Victory Column used to right in front of the Reichstag but was moved when the evil dude decided it crowded his view if he was to ever use the House. So it was moved up the road in the middle of Tiergarten which through the war was a picture of barren land which Berlin folk used to grow food and sustain themselves while resources were drastically low. It has seen the Prussian Monarchy leave, Communism and now Democracy all in the past 100 years.
The Reichstag.
The mirrored cone in the middle of the domed ceiling. You walk around the dome to the top where you are greeted by 360 degree views of the city which on this perfectly gorgeous autumn day was breathtaking.
Just before we walked up the ramps we walked around this middle level. In the background you can see a white pointy tower which is the TV tower and to the right of it is the Berlin Dome.
