The Mammoths!

We are taking great advantage lately of Cityrail's $2.50 train/bus/ferry all day tickets on Sundays and getting out and about the city again.

To start off on this perfect Autumn day we went to see Monsters vs Aliens 3D at Imax with our complimentary tickets we received last time we were there. We really enjoyed the movie, nothing beats treats and popcorn at the same time!
Darling Harbour was also celebrating its 21st birthday. There were loads of people enjoying the celebrations. Music was playing and street walkers were making the rounds and befriended Damien. We enjoyed our sandwiches on the waters edge, lapping up the warm kiss of the sun.

As we strolled up to the Australian Museum, Damien took us to all his old comic book haunts were we perused the shelves of comics forgotten. Queen Victoria building was also lovely to walk through. We went searching for the Jade Carriage, but alas it was not to be found. I wonder where it has gone.
We remembered the Anzac's as we walked through Hyde Park and reflected at the Memorial.

Next stop, the Museum! We love taking advantage of our annual pass and this time Damien got to go with us. The Mammoth exhibition has travelled from the Natural History Museum of Paris. Seeing the mammoths was unbelievable. They almost seem quite mythical until you see the artifacts and read about their history and discovery of the fossils. Little did I know that elephants roamed at the same time, quite possibly along side these woolly giants. We learnt that Neanderthals got up to all sort of tricks to capture these giants and didn't waste a ounce of it. A campsite has been discovered where people of the time built huts out of up to 30 mammoths bones. The size of the tusks is incredible. Also found by current locals was a baby mammoth about 10 months old perfectly preserved. And if you go fishing in the North sea you can fish for your own fossils. Another thing that amazed us was the size of their teeth and all they were used for was to grind grass.

Here are the photos, hope you enjoy them.
